UPSC Main Exam Syllabus

The Main Exam is a comprehensive examination that tests the candidate's in-depth knowledge and understanding of various subjects. The syllabus for the Main Exam includes:

General Studies Paper I to IV: These papers cover a wide range of topics, including Indian Heritage and Culture, History of India and Indian National Movement, World Geography and Geography of India, Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations, Economic and Social Development, and Environmental Ecology and Biodiversity.


Optional Paper I and II: The candidate must choose two optional subjects from a list of approved subjects. Some of the most popular optional subjects include History, Geography, Political Science, Public Administration, Sociology, and Economics.


Essay Paper: This paper tests the candidate's ability to write an essay on a given topic.


General Studies Paper V and VI (only for those candidates who are appearing for the interview for the first time): These papers are based on the personality test and are designed to assess the candidate's personal qualities, intelligence, and character.
